Manipur Governor orders upcoming Assembly session null & void
In a sudden turn of events, the seventh session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, which was scheduled to begin on February 10, has been declared “null and void” by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla with immediate effect. This decision comes in the wake of Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s resignation, which he tendered to the Governor at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Sunday.
The development has sent shockwaves across the state, with many political observers wondering what the future holds for the state’s political landscape. The Governor’s decision to cancel the Assembly session throws a spanner in the works for the government, which was set to face a no-confidence motion from the opposition parties.
According to sources, Chief Minister N Biren Singh had tendered his resignation to Governor Bhalla after a meeting with his Cabinet colleagues. The exact reasons behind the Chief Minister’s sudden resignation are still unclear, but it is believed to be linked to the government’s handling of the recent border dispute with Myanmar.
The decision to cancel the Assembly session has been met with mixed reactions from various quarters. While some have welcomed the move, saying it would prevent any further chaos and instability in the state, others have criticized the Governor’s decision, terming it as “unconstitutional” and “undemocratic”.
The opposition parties in the state have been vocal in their criticism of the Governor’s decision, accusing him of acting in a partisan manner. “This is a clear attempt by the Governor to scuttle the democratic process and prevent the opposition parties from moving a no-confidence motion against the government,” said a senior leader of the opposition party.
The Congress party, which has been a vocal critic of the government, has also condemned the Governor’s decision. “The Governor’s move is a clear violation of the Constitution and the principles of democracy,” said the party’s state president. “We will not allow the Governor to undermine the democratic process and will take all necessary steps to ensure that the Assembly session goes ahead as scheduled.”
The BJP, on the other hand, has welcomed the Governor’s decision, terming it as a “pragmatic” move. “The Governor has taken a wise decision by cancelling the Assembly session,” said a senior BJP leader. “This will prevent any further chaos and instability in the state and ensure that the government can focus on its development agenda.”
The development has also sparked concerns about the future of the state’s political scenario. With the Assembly session cancelled, it is unclear when the next session will be held or what the government’s plans are for the state’s political future.
In the meantime, the opposition parties have announced that they will move a no-confidence motion against the government in the next Assembly session, whenever it is held. “We will not let the Governor’s decision stop us from holding the government accountable,” said a senior opposition leader. “We will move a no-confidence motion in the next Assembly session and ensure that the government is held accountable for its actions.”
As the situation in Manipur continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the state’s political landscape has been thrown into chaos, and it remains to be seen what the future holds for the state’s government and opposition parties.
