Manipur Governor orders upcoming Assembly session null & void
In a sudden turn of events, the seventh session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, which was slated to begin on February 10, has been declared “null and void” by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. This decision comes after Chief Minister N Biren Singh tendered his resignation to the Governor at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Sunday.
The Governor’s decision was announced in a notification issued by the Raj Bhavan, citing that the Chief Minister’s resignation has rendered the scheduled Assembly session redundant. The notification stated that the session, which was to be convened on February 10, is hereby cancelled with immediate effect.
The move has sent shockwaves across the state, with many political observers speculating about the motives behind the Governor’s sudden decision. The cancellation of the Assembly session also raises questions about the fate of the no-confidence motion that was scheduled to be tabled during the session.
The no-confidence motion was filed by the opposition parties, including the Congress, the CPI(M), and the CPI, against the BJP-led government in the state. The motion was set to be tabled during the upcoming Assembly session, which would have marked a significant development in the state’s political landscape.
The opposition parties had been demanding the Chief Minister’s resignation over allegations of corruption and misgovernance. The BJP government, however, had brushed off the allegations, accusing the opposition of trying to destabilize the government.
The cancellation of the Assembly session has also raised concerns about the functioning of the government in the state. With the Chief Minister’s resignation, the government is now in a state of limbo, with no clear direction or leadership.
The Governor’s decision has also been criticized by several opposition leaders, who have accused him of acting in a partisan manner. “The Governor’s decision is politically motivated and is an attempt to scuttle the no-confidence motion,” said Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh.
The CPI(M) leader, Kshetrimayum Bhabananda Singh, also slammed the Governor’s decision, saying that it was a “clear attempt to subvert the democratic process”. “The Governor should have allowed the Assembly session to take place and let the people decide the fate of the government,” he added.
On the other hand, the BJP has welcomed the Governor’s decision, saying that it was a “necessary step” to maintain stability in the state. “The Chief Minister’s resignation has created a vacuum in the government, and the Governor’s decision to cancel the Assembly session is a wise move,” said BJP leader, Sushil Ahlawat.
The cancellation of the Assembly session has also raised questions about the future of the state’s politics. With the government in a state of limbo, there is growing uncertainty about the fate of the state and its people.
As the situation unfolds, one thing is clear – the politics of Manipur has taken a dramatic turn, and the people of the state are watching with bated breath to see what the future holds.
