Bengaluru Demands Better Management of Greenery and Trees
As Bengaluru continues to grow and urbanize, the city’s green cover has become a pressing concern. With the increasing population and urban sprawl, the city’s trees and green spaces are facing unprecedented pressure. In an effort to address this issue, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) hosted a public consultation on Tuesday, inviting residents to share their thoughts on the management of Bengaluru’s greenery and trees.
The consultation was an opportunity for residents to emphasize the need for a comprehensive tree plantation and management strategy. They urged the civic body to clarify the roles of the multiple agencies involved in maintaining Bengaluru’s green cover and highlighted the importance of roadside plantations in urban forestry.
According to a report published by News Karnataka, residents attending the consultation stressed the need for better management of Bengaluru’s greenery and trees. They pointed out that the city’s green cover is rapidly dwindling due to factors such as urbanization, encroachment, and lack of maintenance.
One of the major concerns raised by residents was the lack of coordination among the various agencies responsible for maintaining Bengaluru’s green spaces. The BBMP, the Forest Department, and the Karnataka Urban Forest Authority are all involved in tree plantation and management, but residents felt that there was a lack of clear roles and responsibilities.
“Each agency is working in isolation, and there is no coordination among them,” said a resident. “As a result, our green cover is suffering. We need a comprehensive plan that takes into account the roles and responsibilities of each agency.”
Residents also emphasized the importance of roadside plantations in urban forestry. They pointed out that roadside plantations not only provide shade and improve air quality but also help to reduce noise pollution and improve the overall aesthetic appeal of the city.
“Roadside plantations are a vital component of urban forestry,” said another resident. “They provide a natural barrier against pollution and noise, and they also help to reduce the urban heat island effect. We need to prioritize roadside plantations in our urban planning.”
The consultation also highlighted the need for community involvement in tree plantation and management. Residents felt that community groups and NGOs should be actively involved in the process of tree planting and maintenance.
“Community involvement is essential for the success of any tree plantation and management strategy,” said a resident. “We need to engage with local communities and involve them in the process of tree planting and maintenance. This will not only increase awareness about the importance of green cover but also ensure that trees are properly maintained.”
The BBMP has promised to take into account the suggestions and concerns raised by residents during the consultation. The civic body has committed to developing a comprehensive tree plantation and management strategy that takes into account the roles and responsibilities of each agency and prioritizes community involvement.
“We will develop a comprehensive plan that takes into account the concerns and suggestions raised by residents,” said a BBMP official. “We will work closely with community groups and NGOs to ensure that our tree plantation and management strategy is effective and sustainable.”
As Bengaluru continues to grow and urbanize, the management of its greenery and trees will become an increasingly important issue. The city’s residents are calling for better management of its green cover, and the BBMP has promised to take their concerns seriously. With a comprehensive tree plantation and management strategy in place, Bengaluru can ensure that its green spaces are protected and preserved for future generations.
