Leaning Transformer in Indiranagar Sparks Fears
The picturesque neighborhood of Indiranagar in Bengaluru is no stranger to the hustle and bustle of daily life. With its bustling streets, trendy cafes, and upscale residential properties, it’s a hub of activity that’s hard to ignore. However, a recent development has sparked concerns among residents and commuters alike – a severely tilting pole-mounted transformer that’s become a safety hazard.
Positioned precariously on a leaning metal pole and a damaged concrete base, the transformer is a ticking time bomb, waiting to collapse at any moment. And, to make matters worse, it’s located in a busy area that sees constant pedestrian movement. The very thought of it is enough to send shivers down the spines of those who’ve witnessed its precarious condition.
The transformer, which supplies electricity to several homes and commercial establishments in the area, has been leaning at an alarming angle for quite some time now. Despite numerous complaints and alerts to the authorities, it remains a source of concern, with many residents and locals fearing the worst.
“I’ve been living in Indiranagar for over a decade, and I’ve never seen anything like this,” says Ramesh, a resident of the area. “It’s a matter of time before it collapses, and the consequences could be disastrous. We’re talking about a busy street here, with people walking by every minute. It’s just a matter of time before someone gets hurt.”
Ramesh is not alone in his concerns. Several other residents have expressed similar fears, citing the danger posed by the leaning transformer. “It’s a ticking time bomb,” says another resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “I’m surprised it hasn’t collapsed already. It’s just a matter of time before it does, and when it does, it’ll be a tragedy waiting to happen.”
The concerns are not unfounded. The transformer is precariously perched on a damaged concrete base, which is no match for the weight and stress it’s under. The metal pole supporting it is also showing signs of wear and tear, with several residents reporting cracks and rust spots. It’s only a matter of time before it gives way, taking the transformer with it.
Despite the concerns, the authorities seem to be dragging their feet when it comes to addressing the issue. The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM), which is responsible for maintaining the transformer, has been slow to respond to complaints from residents. In fact, several residents have reported being told that the transformer is “safe” and that it’s being monitored regularly.
“That’s just not true,” says Ramesh. “I’ve seen the transformer myself, and it’s clear that it’s not safe. We’re not asking for much – just for the authorities to take action and fix the problem. It’s not like we’re asking them to build a new transformer or something.”
For now, residents are left to wonder when – not if – the transformer will collapse. It’s a situation that’s not only a safety hazard but also a testament to the lack of attention to detail and the poor maintenance of public infrastructure in Bengaluru.
As the city continues to grow and evolve, it’s essential that residents and authorities alike prioritize safety and maintenance. The leaning transformer in Indiranagar is a stark reminder of the importance of taking action before it’s too late.
