
Shah holds review meet on 3 new criminal laws with Northeast CMs
In a significant development, Home Minister Amit Shah held a review meeting in Guwahati on Sunday to discuss the implementation of three new criminal laws- the Assam Excise (Amendment) Act, 2020, the Assam Public Services (Second Amendment) Act, 2020, and the Assam Police (Amendment) Act, 2020- across the Northeast region. The meeting was attended by seven Chief Ministers of the region, who updated the Home Minister on the progress made in implementing these laws.
The meeting was held at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati, where Shah was briefed by the Chief Ministers on the steps taken by their respective governments to implement the three laws. The laws, which were enacted by the Assam government, aim to strengthen the criminal justice system in the region and address issues such as drug smuggling, corruption, and crime against women and children.
The Assam Excise (Amendment) Act, 2020, aims to tackle the problem of drug smuggling in the region, while the Assam Public Services (Second Amendment) Act, 2020, aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the recruitment of public servants. The Assam Police (Amendment) Act, 2020, aims to strengthen the criminal justice system by providing for harsher penalties for criminals and improving the investigation and prosecution of crimes.
During the meeting, the Chief Ministers presented the progress made by their governments in implementing the three laws. They also shared their concerns and suggestions for improving the implementation of the laws. Shah appreciated the efforts made by the Chief Ministers and their governments in implementing the laws and assured them of the Centre’s support in addressing any challenges they may face.
The meeting was attended by seven Chief Ministers of the Northeast region, including Sarbananda Sonowal (Assam), Conrad Sangma (Meghalaya), N. Biren Singh (Manipur), Pema Khandu (Arunachal Pradesh), Himanta Biswa Sarma (Assam), Y. Patton (Nagaland), and H. D. Dewan (Sikkim).
Shah also released a book published by the Assam government on the three new laws. The book, titled “Three New Acts: A New Era of Criminal Justice”, provides a detailed overview of the laws and their objectives. It also includes the texts of the laws, as well as the reasons behind their enactment.
The meeting was seen as a significant step towards strengthening the criminal justice system in the Northeast region. The region has been plagued by issues such as drug smuggling, corruption, and crime against women and children, and the implementation of these laws is expected to help address these issues.
In a statement, Shah said that the Centre was committed to supporting the Northeast region in its efforts to implement the three laws. He also urged the Chief Ministers to continue their efforts to implement the laws in a effective and efficient manner.
