Siddaramaiah Requests Maha to Release Water to North Karnataka
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has made a plea to his Maharashtra counterpart Devendra Fadnavis to release water from the Wama/Koyna and Ujjani reservoirs to meet the drinking water needs of North Karnataka. Siddaramaiah’s request comes at a time when several districts in the region, including Belagavi and Vijayapura, are facing severe water shortages since March.
In a statement, Siddaramaiah highlighted the dire situation in North Karnataka, stating that the area will not be able to cater to its water needs until the monsoon arrives. He emphasized the need for immediate action to address the crisis, citing the severe water shortages faced by the region.
The request by Siddaramaiah is significant, as the Wama/Koyna and Ujjani reservoirs are located in Maharashtra and are fed by rivers that flow into Karnataka. The release of water from these reservoirs could significantly alleviate the water scarcity in North Karnataka.
The water shortage crisis in North Karnataka has been ongoing for several months, with several districts reporting severe drought conditions. The situation is particularly dire in Belagavi and Vijayapura, which are two of the most affected districts. The water scarcity has led to a significant impact on daily life, with residents facing difficulties in accessing clean drinking water.
Siddaramaiah’s request to Fadnavis is part of a larger effort to address the water crisis in North Karnataka. The Karnataka government has been working to implement measures to conserve water and reduce consumption, but more needs to be done to alleviate the crisis.
In recent months, the Karnataka government has taken several steps to address the water crisis, including releasing water from the Almatti dam and increasing the allocation of water to the region from the Krishna River. However, these efforts have been insufficient to meet the region’s water needs, leading to the urgent request for water from Maharashtra.
The request by Siddaramaiah to Fadnavis is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to address the water crisis in North Karnataka. The release of water from the Wama/Koyna and Ujjani reservoirs could provide significant relief to the region, which is facing a severe water shortage.
It remains to be seen how Maharashtra responds to Siddaramaiah’s request. However, the urgency of the situation in North Karnataka makes it imperative that the two states work together to address the crisis.
