AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi Challenges Waqf Bill in Supreme Court
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief, Asaduddin Owaisi, has moved the Supreme Court to challenge the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025, which was recently passed by both Houses of Parliament. Owaisi has stated that the provisions of the bill “brazenly violate the fundamental rights of Muslims and the Muslim community”. This move comes as no surprise, given the AIMIM’s strong opposition to the bill, which they claim is an attempt to undermine the rights of Muslims in the country.
The Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025, was passed on March 16, 2025, and aims to amend the Waqf Act, 1995, to give more powers to the Central Government to regulate and manage Waqf properties. The bill also seeks to establish a National Waqf Development Corporation to develop and manage Waqf properties, and to provide for the creation of a Waqf Development Council to advise the Central Government on matters related to Waqf.
However, Owaisi and his party have strongly opposed the bill, claiming that it is an attempt to take away the rights of Muslims to manage their own religious institutions and properties. In a statement, Owaisi said, “The provisions of the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025, brazenly violate the fundamental rights of Muslims and the Muslim community. The bill is an attack on the autonomy and self-governance of Waqf institutions and properties”.
Owaisi further added that the bill is an attempt to undermine the rights of Muslims and to impose the will of the Central Government on the Muslim community. He also claimed that the bill is an attempt to destroy the autonomy of Waqf institutions and to make them subservient to the Central Government.
The AIMIM chief also accused the Central Government of trying to divide the Muslim community and to create a rift between different sections of the community. He said, “The Central Government is trying to create a divide between different sections of the Muslim community by introducing this bill. They are trying to create a rift between the Shia and Sunni communities, and between different sects of Islam”.
The Congress party has also announced that it will challenge the bill in the Supreme Court “very soon”. A senior Congress leader, Mohammad Jawed, said, “We will challenge the bill in the Supreme Court as it is an attack on the rights of Muslims and the Muslim community. We will not allow the Central Government to undermine the autonomy of Waqf institutions and to take away the rights of Muslims”.
The opposition parties have also accused the Central Government of trying to impose its will on the Muslim community and to undermine their rights. They have claimed that the bill is an attempt to create a Hindu-Rashtra and to destroy the secular fabric of the country.
The Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025, has been criticized by many for being an attempt to impose the will of the Central Government on the Muslim community and to undermine their rights. Many have claimed that the bill is an attack on the autonomy of Waqf institutions and properties, and that it is an attempt to destroy the self-governance of the Muslim community.
However, the Central Government has defended the bill, claiming that it is an attempt to modernize the Waqf Act and to bring it in line with the changing times. They have claimed that the bill will help to increase the development of Waqf properties and to provide more benefits to the Muslim community.
In conclusion, the AIMIM’s move to challenge the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025, in the Supreme Court is a significant development in the country’s political landscape. The opposition parties have strongly criticized the bill, claiming that it is an attempt to undermine the rights of Muslims and to impose the will of the Central Government on the Muslim community. The outcome of the case will be closely watched by all, and it will be interesting to see how the Supreme Court rules on this contentious issue.
