PM Modi Must Apologise: Congress on ED Closure Report in CWG Case
The Congress party has demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal after a Delhi court accepted the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) closure report in the Commonwealth Games 2010 (CWG) scam case. The party’s leader, Jairam Ramesh, has stated that the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister must apologize to the people of India for misleading the country.
The ED had filed a closure report in 2019, stating that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with the case against the accused, including the then Union Minister Suresh Kalmadi and other officials. The court’s acceptance of the report has led to a fierce backlash from the Congress party, which has accused the current government of trying to cover up the scam.
Jairam Ramesh, a senior Congress leader, has been vocal in his criticism of the government’s handling of the case. In a recent statement, he said, “PM Narendra Modi and Arvind Kejriwal must apologise to the people of India for misleading the country. Manmohan Singh and Sheila Dikshit, who were falsely accused, must also be exonerated.”
The Congress party has been pushing for a thorough investigation into the CWG scam, which was one of the biggest scandals to hit the country during the UPA regime. The scandal involved large-scale corruption and mismanagement, with allegations of embezzlement of funds, irregularities in tendering processes, and misuse of public funds.
The party has accused the current government of trying to bury the truth and protect the accused. “The government is trying to cover up the scam by filing closure reports and accepting them without any investigation,” said Ramesh. “This is a clear case of political vendetta and an attempt to protect the accused.”
The Congress party has also accused the government of trying to tarnish the image of its leaders, including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. “Manmohan Singh and Sheila Dikshit were unfairly targeted and maligned by the BJP and AAP in the wake of the scam,” said Ramesh. “They were falsely accused of involvement in the scam, and it is now clear that they were innocent.”
The party has demanded a thorough investigation into the scam and the appointment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. “The people of India have a right to know the truth about the CWG scam,” said Ramesh. “We demand a fair and transparent investigation into the scam, and the arrest and prosecution of those found guilty.”
The Congress party’s demand for an apology from PM Modi and Arvind Kejriwal has also been met with criticism from the BJP and AAP. “The Congress party is trying to politicize the issue and divert attention from its own failures,” said a BJP spokesperson. “The government has taken a decision based on the law, and it is not necessary to apologize for it.”
AAP, which was a key player in the agitation against the CWG scam during its initial stages, has also distanced itself from the Congress party’s demands. “We have always demanded a thorough investigation into the scam, and we will continue to do so,” said AAP spokesperson. “We will not support any attempt to politicize the issue or demand an apology from anyone.”
The CWG scam is a sensitive issue in India, and its handling has the potential to impact the country’s political landscape. The Congress party’s demand for an apology from PM Modi and Arvind Kejriwal is likely to be met with resistance from the BJP and AAP, but it has highlighted the need for a thorough investigation into the scam and the appointment of a Special Investigation Team to probe the matter.
As the debate continues, one thing is clear: the CWG scam is a complex issue that requires a nuanced approach. The government’s decision to accept the ED’s closure report has raised many questions, and it is up to the people of India to demand a fair and transparent investigation into the scam.
