TN Inks MoU with Dixon to Build HP Laptop Factory near Chennai
In a significant move to boost the state’s economy and strengthen its position in the global electronics manufacturing sector, the Tamil Nadu government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dixon Technologies to set up a ₹1,000 crore HP laptop manufacturing facility at Oragadam near Chennai. This ambitious project is expected to produce up to two million units annually and generate over 5,000 jobs in the region.
The MoU was signed under the Centre’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) 2.0 scheme, which aims to promote domestic manufacturing and enhance India’s manufacturing capabilities. The scheme offers a financial incentive to manufacturers who set up new facilities or expand existing ones in the country.
The new factory, operated by Dixon’s subsidiary Padget Electronics, will be a significant addition to the state’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem. Chennai is already home to several prominent electronics manufacturing companies, including those from the likes of Foxconn, Dell, and Oracle.
The HP laptop manufacturing facility is expected to be a major boost to the local economy, providing employment opportunities to thousands of people in the region. The project is also expected to contribute significantly to the state’s GDP, making it a significant driver of growth and development.
The Tamil Nadu government has been actively promoting the state as a preferred destination for electronics manufacturing companies. The state has a well-established infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and a business-friendly environment, making it an attractive location for companies looking to set up shop.
The HP laptop manufacturing facility is expected to be operational within the next 24 months, with the first phase of the project expected to be completed within the next 18 months. The facility will have a production capacity of up to two million units annually, making it one of the largest laptop manufacturing facilities in the country.
The MoU was signed in the presence of senior officials from the Tamil Nadu government and Dixon Technologies, including Tamil Nadu Industries Minister O.S. Manian and Dixon Technologies Managing Director Atul Kumar Kanodia.
Commenting on the development, O.S. Manian, Tamil Nadu Industries Minister, said, “We are delighted to partner with Dixon Technologies to set up a world-class laptop manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu. This project is a significant step forward in our efforts to promote electronics manufacturing in the state and create new employment opportunities for our people.”
Atul Kumar Kanodia, Managing Director of Dixon Technologies, said, “We are thrilled to partner with the Tamil Nadu government to set up this state-of-the-art laptop manufacturing facility. We believe that this project will not only generate new employment opportunities but also contribute significantly to the state’s GDP.”

The sector has attracted significant investments from leading companies, both domestic and international, and has created thousands of jobs in the region.
