Uproar in Raj Assembly over BJP minister’s remark on Indira Gandhi
The Rajasthan Assembly witnessed an unprecedented ruckus on Friday after BJP Minister Avinash Gehlot made a remark that was perceived as an insult to the memory of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Gehlot, while addressing the House, referred to Indira Gandhi as “aapki dadi” (your grandmother), which is believed to be a jibe at Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader and great-grandson of Indira Gandhi.
The remark sparked a fierce reaction from the Congress leaders, who were present in the House. They immediately protested against Gehlot’s statement, demanding an apology from him. The Congress MLAs were heard shouting slogans like “Shame, shame, shame” and “Apologize, apologize, apologize” as they walked out of the House.
The situation quickly escalated as the Congress MLAs began to create a ruckus in the Well of the House. The Speaker of the Assembly, C.P. Joshi, tried to calm the situation but was unsuccessful. The House was adjourned for the day as the situation became unmanageable.
In the aftermath of the incident, six Congress MLAs were suspended from the House for the rest of the day. The suspended MLAs have decided to spend the night in the Well of the House, protesting against the BJP government’s actions.
“This is an insult to the entire Nehru-Gandhi family. We will not tolerate such language in the House,” said a suspended Congress MLA, who wished to remain anonymous. “We demand an apology from the Minister and the BJP government. We will not leave the Well until we get justice.”
The BJP government, however, defended Gehlot’s statement, saying that it was not meant to be an insult to Indira Gandhi. “The Minister’s statement was misunderstood,” said a BJP spokesperson. “Gehlot was trying to make a point about Rahul Gandhi’s age and his inexperience in politics. It was not meant to be an insult to the former Prime Minister.”
However, the Congress party was not convinced by the BJP’s explanation. “The BJP government is trying to justify Gehlot’s statement by saying it was not meant to be an insult,” said a Congress spokesperson. “But the fact remains that the statement was insulting and it has hurt the sentiments of the Congress party and its leaders.”
The incident has sparked a heated debate in the state, with many political leaders and analysts weighing in on the issue. Some have called for Gehlot’s resignation, while others have defended his right to freedom of speech.
“This is a clear case of hate speech and Gehlot should be punished for it,” said a local journalist. “The BJP government is trying to polarize the state by making such statements. It is unfortunate that the Minister has chosen to use such language in the House.”
The incident has also raised questions about the state of politics in Rajasthan. Is the BJP government trying to create a divide between different communities in the state? Is the Congress party being targeted unfairly by the BJP government?
The incident is a reminder of the growing tensions between the BJP and the Congress party in Rajasthan. The state is scheduled to go to polls in the near future, and the incident is likely to have a significant impact on the political landscape.
As the situation in the Assembly continues to unfold, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Gehlot and the BJP government. Will they face any consequences for their actions? Will the Congress party be able to capitalize on the incident to its advantage?
Only time will tell.
