AIIMS Doctors Separate ‘Parasitic Twin’ from 17-Year-Old Boy in Rare Surgery
In a remarkable medical feat, a team of doctors at AIIMS Delhi has successfully performed a complex surgery on a 17-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh, who was born with an underdeveloped parasitic twin attached to his torso. The parasitic twin, which was a pair of extra legs, was causing significant discomfort and posing a risk to the boy’s other organs. After a 10-hour long surgery, the doctors were able to separate the parasitic twin, giving the young patient a new lease on life.
The condition, known as parasitic twin, is extremely rare, affecting only one in one crore people. The patient, who has not been named, was born with the extra legs attached to his torso, which were not growing properly and were causing him immense pain and discomfort. The legs were not only affecting his mobility but also posing a risk to his other organs, including his kidneys and intestines.
According to the doctors, the surgery was a challenging one, requiring a team of experts from various departments, including plastic surgery, orthopedics, and general surgery. The team was led by Dr. S K Sharma, Professor of Plastic Surgery at AIIMS Delhi, who has over 25 years of experience in performing such complex surgeries.
“The surgery was a massive challenge, but we were determined to give the young boy a new life,” Dr. Sharma said in an interview. “The patient was born with an underdeveloped parasitic twin, which was causing him immense pain and discomfort. We had to work carefully to separate the twin without causing any damage to the patient’s other organs.”
The surgery, which lasted for over 10 hours, involved a series of complex procedures, including the removal of the extra legs and the repair of damaged tissue. The doctors used advanced medical technology, including 3D imaging, to plan the surgery and ensure that the patient’s other organs were not damaged during the procedure.
After the surgery, the patient was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for observation and monitoring. According to Dr. Sharma, the patient is recovering well and is expected to make a full recovery.
“The patient is doing well, and we are hopeful that he will make a full recovery,” Dr. Sharma said. “We are monitoring his progress closely and will continue to provide him with the best possible care to ensure that he leads a normal life.”
The successful surgery has been hailed as a major medical breakthrough, and the doctors involved in the procedure are being praised for their expertise and dedication.
“This surgery is a testament to the expertise and dedication of our doctors and medical team,” said Dr. Randeep Guleria, Director of AIIMS Delhi, in a statement. “We are proud to have been able to provide this young patient with a new lease on life, and we are committed to continuing to provide the best possible care to all our patients.”
The surgery has also raised awareness about the condition of parasitic twin, which is extremely rare but can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life. According to the doctors, the condition is usually detected during pregnancy, but in some cases, it may not be diagnosed until the child is born.
“We believe that this surgery will raise awareness about the condition of parasitic twin and help us to identify more cases in the future,” Dr. Sharma said. “We are committed to continuing to provide the best possible care to all our patients, and we are proud to have been able to give this young patient a new lease on life.”
