CSK Lose to SRH in Chennai for the First Time in History
The 43rd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 saw SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) pull off a stunning five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai on Friday. What made this win all the more special for SRH was that it was their first-ever victory over CSK in Chennai, breaking a long-standing jinx.
Before this match, SRH had lost all six of their previous encounters against CSK in Chennai, making this win a momentous occasion for the Hyderabad-based franchise. The win has also catapulted SRH to the eighth spot on the points table, while CSK remain rooted at the bottom with seven losses to their name.
SRH’s victory was not without its share of drama, as they chased down CSK’s score of 169 with just two balls to spare. The Hyderabad team’s openers, Abhishek Sharma and Mayank Agarwal, set the tone for the chase with a 50-run partnership before SRH’s middle-order batsmen took over.
Kane Williamson, who has been in fine form this season, played a crucial role in the chase, scoring an unbeaten 43 off 34 balls. The SRH captain was well-supported by Abdul Samad, who chipped in with a quickfire 24 off 12 balls.
CSK’s bowling attack, which has been their strength this season, failed to fire in the match. The Chennai team’s pace trio of Deepak Chahar, Mukesh Choudhary, and Simarjeet Singh, who have been among the wickets this season, were unable to contain the SRH batsmen.
In fact, CSK’s bowlers conceded 14 fours and three sixes in their 20 overs, giving SRH a comfortable run rate throughout the chase. The Chennai team’s fielding was also sloppy at times, with a few dropped catches and misfields allowing SRH to get away with runs.
CSK’s batting performance was also disappointing, as they failed to build on a decent start provided by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway. The duo added 50 runs for the first wicket before CSK’s middle-order batsmen failed to capitalise on the good start.
The Chennai team’s top-order batsmen, including Shivam Dube and Ambati Rayudu, were unable to make the most of the good start, scoring 23 and 17 respectively. The CSK tail also failed to wag, with the team’s last three batsmen adding just 20 runs between them.
SRH’s bowling attack, led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan, did a decent job in restricting CSK to a manageable total. The duo, who have been SRH’s most successful bowlers this season, shared three wickets between them and conceded 64 runs in their 10 overs.
In the end, SRH’s five-wicket victory was a testament to their never-say-die spirit and the ability to chase down difficult targets. For CSK, the loss was a bitter pill to swallow, especially since it was their first defeat at home this season.
The loss has also put extra pressure on CSK, who are struggling to find their footing in the tournament. The Chennai team will need to regroup quickly and come up with a more convincing performance if they are to turn their season around.
On the other hand, SRH’s victory will give them a much-needed boost in confidence. The Hyderabad team will look to build on this win and push for a spot in the playoffs, where they will hope to make a deeper impact.
As the IPL 2025 continues to unfold, one thing is clear – SRH has finally broken the jinx of not winning a match against CSK in Chennai, and they will be eager to build on this momentum in future matches.
