Delhi Capitals Record Their Biggest Run Chase in IPL History
The Delhi Capitals (DC) got off to a thrilling start in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, as they scripted history by recording their biggest run chase in the tournament’s history. In their opener against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), DC chased down a massive 210-run target in 19.3 overs, thanks to an unbeaten knock of 66 off 31 deliveries by their batting all-rounder Ashutosh Sharma.
The match, which took place on March 25th at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, witnessed a nail-biting finish as DC won by a narrow margin of one wicket. The victory not only marked a successful start to the campaign for the Delhi-based franchise but also showcased their team’s resilience and determination.
LSG, led by KL Rahul, had set a daunting target of 210 runs for DC, with opener Quinton de Kock scoring an impressive 62 off 41 deliveries. However, it was DC’s Ashutosh Sharma who stole the show with his blistering innings, which included five sixes and five fours.
Sharma, who has been a consistent performer for DC in the shorter formats, played a crucial role in his team’s victory. His unbeaten knock not only helped DC to chase down the target but also showcased his team’s ability to adapt to different situations.
The match began with LSG setting a strong foundation, thanks to the opening partnership between de Kock and Manish Pandey. The duo added 75 runs in just 9 overs, setting the tone for a big total. However, DC’s bowlers, led by pacer Shardul Thakur, fought back well to restrict LSG to 209 runs in 20 overs.
In response, DC’s top-order batsmen, including David Warner and Prithvi Shaw, struggled to score runs freely. However, Sharma’s arrival at the crease changed the complexion of the match. The all-rounder, known for his aggressive batting style, took the attack to the LSG bowlers, scoring boundaries and sixes at will.
Sharma’s partnership with Axar Patel, who scored 24 off 16 deliveries, was instrumental in DC’s victory. The duo added 50 runs in just 5 overs, bringing the target within reach.
As the match neared its climax, Sharma continued to play a solo hand, scoring crucial runs to keep DC’s hopes alive. His unbeaten knock, which included five sixes and five fours, earned him the man of the match award.
DC’s victory marked a significant milestone in their IPL history, as they recorded their biggest run chase in the tournament’s history. The win also sent a strong message to the other teams in the competition, showcasing DC’s ability to adapt to different situations and chase down big targets.
In a post-match interview, Sharma credited his team’s determination and hard work for the win. “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but we believed in ourselves. We worked hard in the nets, and it paid off today,” he said.
DC’s coach, Ricky Ponting, also praised his team’s performance, saying, “I’m really proud of the boys. They showed a lot of character and determination to chase down a big target.”
The win has given DC a much-needed boost ahead of their next match, which is against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 28th. The team will look to continue their winning momentum and make a strong push for the playoffs.
