Marizanne delivers first double wicket maiden over of WPL 2025
The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 has witnessed many thrilling moments so far, but one of the most remarkable feats was achieved by Marizanne Kapp of the Delhi Capitals. In a match against the Gujarat Giants at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on February 25, Kapp delivered the first double wicket maiden over of the tournament, sending Phoebe Litchfield and Harleen Deol packing. The Delhi Capitals went on to win the match by 6 wickets, showcasing their impressive skills in all departments of the game.
Marizanne Kapp, a South African all-rounder, has been in fine form throughout the tournament, and her exceptional bowling display against the Gujarat Giants was a testament to her skills. In the 14th over of the Gujarat Giants’ innings, Kapp was introduced into the attack, and she made an immediate impact. The first ball of her over was a dot ball, followed by a maiden over, which is a rare feat in itself.
However, Kapp was just getting started. The next ball she bowled was a beautiful delivery that clipped the top of Phoebe Litchfield’s bat, and the wicketkeeper-batter was caught at mid-on by an alert Jemimah Rodrigues. The wicket was a big one, as Litchfield was looking in good touch and had been playing a crucial role in the Gujarat Giants’ innings.
Kapp was not satisfied with just one wicket, and she continued to attack the Gujarat Giants’ batting line-up. The next ball she bowled was a slower ball that deceived Harleen Deol, and the batter was caught at extra cover by a diving Shafali Verma. The Gujarat Giants were in trouble, and the pressure was mounting on their remaining batters.
The Delhi Capitals’ bowlers continued to put pressure on the Gujarat Giants, and the visitors were eventually bowled out for a modest total of 140. In response, the Delhi Capitals got off to a steady start, with Jemimah Rodrigues and Meg Lanning sharing a 50-run partnership. The duo’s partnership was eventually broken when Lanning was caught at mid-on by an excellent catch by Deol.
However, the Delhi Capitals’ batting line-up was well-equipped to handle the chase, and they continued to pile on the runs. Rodrigues and Shafali Verma shared a 40-run partnership, and the Delhi Capitals reached the target with 6 wickets in hand.
Marizanne Kapp’s exceptional bowling display was the turning point of the match, and it showcased her skills as a bowler. Her ability to bowl at different speeds and angles, as well as her ability to deceive the batters with her variations, made her a handful for the Gujarat Giants.
Kapp’s achievement was not only a testament to her skills as a bowler but also highlighted the importance of bowling in the WPL. The tournament has seen many exciting bowling performances so far, and Kapp’s double wicket maiden over was one of the most impressive.
The win for the Delhi Capitals was their third in the tournament, and it has put them in a strong position to qualify for the playoffs. The Gujarat Giants, on the other hand, were left to regroup and prepare for their next match against the Mumbai Indians.
