US & Ukraine Begin Talks to End Ukraine-Russia War
Tensions between the United States and Ukraine have been escalating in recent weeks, following a disastrous meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House last month. However, in a move aimed at reviving “pragmatic” ties between the two nations, officials from the US and Ukraine met in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to begin talks on ending the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.
The meeting, which took place in the Saudi city of Jeddah, was attended by senior officials from both countries, including US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. For his part, Kuleba expressed hope that the meeting would mark a new era in US-Ukraine relations. “We are committed to working with the US to find a peaceful solution to the conflict, and we believe that this meeting is an important step in that direction,” he said.
The meeting in Saudi Arabia comes at a time of heightened tensions between the US and Russia, following the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and the detention of Russian journalist Ivan Golunov. The conflict in Ukraine has also been exacerbated by the ongoing crisis in Eastern Europe, where Russia has been accused of supporting separatist groups in Ukraine.
